Burnt Paper Leaf Project
Monday, September 25, 2000

(Disclaimer: This is not my idea, a friend of mine was given one of these leaves years ago. I loved it! I ask the friend 's friend how to do it. She saw it on some show she thought, but couldn't remember where. I want to say to who ever made it up GREAT JOB!!! **)

Supplies:
  1. brown kraft paper/bag
  2. leaf to trace design
  3. Elmer's glue
  4. candle (taper)
  5. paper towel
  6. scissors
  7. metallic paint (I used Venetian Gold by Decoart)
  8. paper covered floral wire
Instructions:

1. Trace leaf form on a piece of paper, twice. Cut both out.

2. Apply glue on one side of one leaf. Lay wire on top of glue covered leaf, then lay the other leaf on top of wire and leaf so that the edges all line up. Press the leaves together securely so that it looks like one leaf. Let dry.

3. When dry coat both sides of leaf with glue. Put on fairly heavy, you want a thick coat of glue over the entire surface of the leaf.

4. Light candle and hold glue/leaf directly over the flame. Basically you are cooking the glue. You want to "cook "it until it bubbles and no longer looks wet. Do this to the entire leaf. Be careful as you do this. I recommend keeping a fire extinguisher or water close just in case. The edge may burn slightly but the glue prevents it from really flaming.

5. After the entire leaf is cooked use a paper towel to wipe some of the soot off the surface.

6. I used my finger but you could use a brush and drybrush, apply gold paint to the surface by just gently rubbing over the top. You don't want uniform coverage you want to just highlight areas. Let dry.

7. Spray with a coat of matte acrylic sealer

I think this is a FANTASTIC look and I hope you enjoy making it. Not a craft for the kids I'm afraid, except they could trace and cut out the leaves.

Use extreme caution when doing this craft. Never leave a burning candle unattended.

Have fun, DAZ
