Cast Hand Father's Day Project
Monday, June 3, 2002

Supplies:

  • Casting kit (I used Precious Impressions but there are other brands available.)
  • 2 Mixing containers
  • 8 1/2 cups water
  • Sturdy spatula
  • Paper to cover work area
  • Towels

(IMPORTANT: DO NOT POUR OR WASH ANY OF THE GEL OR PLASTER MIXTURES DOWN THE DRAIN)

Instructions:

1. This procedure must be done somewhat quickly as the gel sets up in about 3 min. Mix the "Precious Gel " according to the directions. 6 cups water to one package of gel. The powder will turn pink when the water is added. It will start to get white as it is setting. When the gel is mixed to the consistency of cake batter pour it into the plastic bucket that came with the kit.

2. After moistening hand, place it into the gel. Practice first so that you know the way you want the hand to look. Make sure that no part of the hand is touching the sides of the bucket. The instructions that came with the kit said that you could use 2 people's hands, but we found that there just wasn't enough room. After the hand is in the gel you must hold it still for 2 1/2 -3 min. You need to just ever so slightly move the fingers and hand to insure that everything is copied.

3. After the gel has set, remove the hand from the gel. Be very careful so as not to tear the mold.

4. Now mix the Precious Stone plaster. 2 1/2 cups water to package. Reserve of small amount of dry mix to fill holes later.
5. Using a spoon pour plaster into the fingertip area of mold. Gently tap the container as you go to remove air bubbles. Keep adding the plaster until the mold is full and you have used all the plaster. Let set on level surface for at least 24 hours. If the humidity is high I recommend letting it set even longer.

6. To remove, turn bucket upside down on top of lid. The mold will gently release from the bucket on it's own. If not, cut it away with a pair of scissors. After it releases remove the bucket.
7. Gently began tearing away parts of the mold. Be extra careful if there are any fingers extended, as they are easily broken off.

8. Let your plaster hand cure for at least a week before varnishing or painting. I think that I will apply a patina bronze finish to mine.
9. Enjoy your hand for years to come and have fun! DAZ
