Morning Show Project by DAZ
Basic Gold Leafing
Monday, January 6, 2003

Supplies:

  • Item to be gold leafed. I used a plaster candleholder and a papier-mâché' box
  • 3 soft bristle brushes
  • DecoArt Venetian Gold Acrylic paint
  • Gold leaf adhesive
  • Sheets of gold leaf
  • Wax paper
  • Gold leaf sealer (I found a kit put out by " Houston Art" called Mona Lisa Products Gold Leaf Kit" for about $12.00)
Instructions:
 1. Prepare surface to be gold leafed, by base coating with the Venetian gold acrylic paint. (Depending on what you are leafing you may need to sand the surface before you basecoat.) Let dry.
 2. Make sure the surface of your project is clean and then apply the gold leaf adhesive. Be sure to put on an even coat and avoid letting the adhesive pool up. Let get tacky, approx. 30-60 min.
 3. Cut a piece of wax paper slightly larger than the sheet of gold leaf, now set the wax paper on the gold leaf sheet and gently rub, this will cause the leafing to adhere to the wax paper so that you can transfer it easily to the item to be leafed.
 4. Now gently press the gold leaf onto the item. Be sure to gently rub it over the area you are covering before removing the wax paper.
 5. Use a soft brush or soft cloth to gently burnish the leafing into the crevices and all over the piece. The brush will also remove any excess leafing.
 6. Repeat steps 3-5 until you have completely covered your project.
 7. To patch places use a little more adhesive over the area, let set to tacky and then reapply leafing.
 8. Now seal the project with a protective coat of sealer, or spray Clear Coat. A water base sealer is not recommended.
 9. I really enjoyed this project and can think of hundreds of ways to use the gold leafing. I hope you will do the same.
Have fun, DAZ
PS Happy New Year!!
