Supplies:

  • Iron-on Transfer Photo copies of Family members and friends. (See instructions below on laying out your page to be copied.
  • Sea sponge
  • Fabric medium
  • Iron
  • 12x18 piece of tea stained or unbleached muslin, with the edges raveled to create a fringe
  • Deco art Americana Paint colors:
    • Terra Cotta
    • Asphaltum
    • Marigold
Instructions:

1.To make a template for your color copies, tape various family photos on a heavy paper or poster board using the double stick tape. Also include cut outs of pumpkins, leaves and other fall stuff. You know make a nice collage. After you have your template made, (and you can make several if you like) go to your nearest copy shop and have an iron-on transfer made for each place mat or use your own ink jet printer and Iron transfer paper.

2. Cut out the photos and any lettering on your transfer. (Remember if you are using lettering on your transfer you must "Flip" the image before you print it so that your letters aren't backward.)

3.Iron the wrinkles out of the muslin until it is smooth.

4. Position cut outs on the placemat the way you want them to be ironed and then turn them over so that the paper backing is facing you.
5.Make sure that you are ironing on a firm surface such as a counter top. Place a pillowcase on top of the counter under the placemat. With Iron preheated to Cotton setting, firmly press each cut out on to the place mat. DO NOT remove any of the backing paper until all the cut outs have been ironed on.
6. Let the iron-on completely cool, then remove the paper backing.

7. Mix the Decoart paints with the fabric medium according to instructions. (Usually 2 parts medium to 1 part paint.

8. Wet the sponge and wring out excess water. Now start applying paint to the placemat in an up & down motion turning the sponge to create a random pattern. Do this for each color. (Hint: When sponging close to image use a piece of paper to cover picture and protect it from paint. If you do get paint on the picture wipe it off while the paint is still wet.) Let dry, heat set according to medium instructions. Remember to NEVER iron directly on Transfers, always use a pressing cloth. I used the left over paint to put on a couple of leaf motifs, this is an option. Also you could use stamps.

9. Enjoy these placemats for many gatherings to come, have fun, DAZ
