Fourth of July T-Shirt Project
Monday, June 19, 2000

Supplies:
  1. Prewashed white T-shirt (no fabric softener)
  2. Masking Tape (use the size you like, this will be the size of the white stripe)
  3. Star stickers (once again, use the size you like, these will be the white stars)
  4. Spritzer Fabric Dye ( I used "Tumble Dye" by Cache Junction)
    1. Blueberry
    2. Raggedy Ann Red
  5. Paper to cover work area and shirt
  6. Waxed Shirtboard or plastic covered cardboard (plastic bags work great for this)
  7. Extra plastic bags (to put in sleeves and bottom of shirt in case board is not long enough)

Note- I recommend you wear old clothes and cover your work area well with newspaper or simply work outside in the yard, which is my favorite.
Instructions:

1. Place the shirtboard inside of the shirt, making sure that the waxed side is under the front of the shirt. Place plastic in the sleeves and the bottom part of the shirt that overhangs the board, this will prevent dye bleed through.

2. Decide which way you want the stripes to run and then tape off the area with one strip of tape.

3. Now place strips of tape, evenly spaced, in the designated area to create the stripes.

4. Place stars in the area of the shirt saved for that.

5. After all your stars and stripes are in place, cover the striped area completely by placing paper over it to prevent the dye from getting on it.

6. Now shake the blue dye well and then start spritzing the dye onto the area where the stars are. Make sure to not over spray or the dye will bleed under the stars. I found that spritzing about 10" -12" above the shirt was a good distance.

7. Let the dye dry for about 10 minutes and then use a DIFFERENT piece of paper to cover the area you just sprayed blue.

8. Shake the red dye well and then spritz the striped area.

9. After the shirt has set for 30 minutes peel the stars, I found if I left the star stickers on the shirt too long the adhesive wanted to stick to the shirt and was harder to remove. The tape can stay on until the shirt dries.

10. When the shirt is completely dry remove the tape and put it in the dryer (by itself) on high for 20 minutes to heat set the dye.

We really enjoyed making this shirt I hope you do too, and HAPPY FOURTH OF JULY!!!
