Fall Door Mat Project
Monday, August 14, 2000

Supplies:
  1. Light colored carpet mat (with the edges bound)
  2. Acrylic Paint: I used a variety of fabric paint and regular acrylic decorative paints, I used Cinnamon, Orange. Red, Yellow and Forest Green.
  3. 2 maple leaves sm. & lg.
  4. Pears and carrots
  5. Masking tape
  6. Sheet of paper
  7. paper towel or rag to clean brush
  8. Paint brush
  9. Plate or plastic lid to pour paint in
Instructions:
1. Using the masking tape write the word welcome on your mat. If you want to make sure it is straight use a piece of tape as a guideline. be sure and remove the guideline before you paint around the welcome. I put my "Welcome" on at a diagonal, I also didn't worry about rough edges because it is the look I am after. Kind of random and wild.

2. Now put drops of paint on the letter W. I put 2-3 green drops together then an orange then a red. Do this in a random pattern. Remember red and green make brown. You may wish to want to wipe the brush out after each letter.

3. Take your paint brush and pull the paint away from the letter until you have gone around the entire letter. Do this for each letter.

4. Lay a maple leave above the lettering, apply the paint the same way as you did for the letters and brush the paint out away from the leaf. Be sure and brush away and to hold the leaf firmly so that it doesn't move.

5. Immediately after you have finished with the leaf outline turn it over and lay it on top of the outline, then place a piece of paper over the leaf and use one of your paint bottles as a rolling pin. This will transfer the veining pattern inside the leaf. Place several leave outlines throughout your mat, use both size leaves.

6. I also painted the leaf in various colors and used the rolling pin technique to apply the shape.

7. Now put some green and yellow together on a plate, do not mix. Cut a pear in half. Try to use the half with the stem. Place the flat side of the pear in the green and yellow paint and twist it around until the pear surface is completely covered. Now use it like a stamp and stamp in pear shapes onto your mat. I overlap some to give a better sense of depth. I also applied a small spot of red to a couple of the pears. When your yellow/green gets too well mixed add fresh green.

8. Now slice a carrot so that you have a flat surface and dip it into red paint to stamp berry clusters throughout the leaves and pears.

9. Let dry for 15-20 min. Now remove the masking tape.

10. You can change the colors according to your taste and you can substitute apples for pear, experiment!

Whatever you choice just remember to have fun, until next time, DAZ
